What are the limitations of adult orthodontics?
In some cases where the root cause of the orthodontic problem is an underlying jaw problem, the full correction of that problem may not be possible without involvement of an oral & maxillofacial surgeon. This is because the adult bone has ceased growing and so in certain extreme cases treatment may not be possible with orthodontics alone.
Other than absence of jaw growth, there are other factors that sometimes complicate adult orthodontic treatment. These may be clinical factors that influence the complexity and extent of the treatment required, such as existing gum disease, loss of or damage to teeth, and the need for numerous fillings, crowns or bridges.
There are also social aspects to consider like a busy career or family matters that influence the type of orthodontic treatment considered.
