This type of braces system is essentially the same as Fixed Braces and we still use a bracket and arch-wire system.
There is, however, a slight difference – the elastic “modules” which are used to hold the wire in place come in a variety of colours intended to making wearing braces more fun and fashionable. The colours can be changed at every appointment. This is fast proving to be a popular style of braces especially, amongst teenagers.
Many of our young patients (and even adult patients!) here at Elite Orthodontics love to customise their braces with colours, either to show them off to their friends and peers or as a way of demonstrating that they are confident about wearing braces and proud to be having orthodontic treatment.
These colours are applied to fixed braces, so it’s worth mentioning a few things here about fixed braces.
Fixed braces are probably still the most common type of orthodontic brace. Many patients ask for fixed braces to have really straight teeth and achieve the best possible improvement of their smile. Small precisely designed buttons called brackets are bonded to each tooth.
The brackets are then connected to each other using a thin wire called an archwire. The wire is held in place with small elastic rings called modules which can either be silver or clear to blend with the colour of the braces, or they can be in any other colour in order to stand out. The wires are adjusted at regular intervals to straighten the teeth and correct the bite.
There are different types of fixed brace, and subject to the right clinical indications, here at Elite Orthodontics we are pleased to offer them all in our practice.
Metal fixed braces have brackets that are made of stainless steel, and the modern types used here at Elite Orthodontics are quite small, and they cover a relatively smaller area of each tooth, making braces much more attractive than they used to be in the past. Patients often comment on how small they look.
These braces are very practical, reliable easy to clean and fast-acting.
The other type of fixed braces are clear tooth-coloured braces, and they are made of ceramic or porcelain. They are translucent or the same colour as the teeth, making them much less noticeable and more hidden or discreet compared to metal brackets.
Coloured modules can be used to hold the archwire in place on the brackets, and they come in a multitude of colours to make the wearing of braces more fun. These colours can be changed at every appointment, and you can go back to having no colours whenever you wish.
Some patients even choose to apply the colours to their clear ceramic braces!
Patients love to express their personality or preferences such as support for football teams through coloured braces.
