How do you know whether to see a general dentist or specialist orthodontist?
6th December 2019
Orthodontics is a speciality within dentistry that focuses on correcting bites, occlusion (contact between teeth), and the straightness of your teeth
Since orthodontists have the same foundational training and qualifications as most dentists, the good thing about seeing an orthodontist is they can help you with standard dental issues as well as more complex treatments that specifically require orthodontic training.
It is true that some dentists can and do provide certain orthodontic treatments such as braces. However, it is unlikely they have the same level of expertise, skills and efficiency as someone who has gone through the additional training to achieve the title of an orthodontist.
Dentists are often permitted to provide some orthodontic treatments (including braces), however, this does not mean the treatment will be carried out to the same level of expertise as it would be by a qualified orthodontist.
If you have a toothache, or you need a filling – then it is best to go to a general dentist who can then provide you with a diagnosis and help with any necessary treatment.
Usually, people have a trusted dentist for a life-time to help with general check-ups and maintenance of dental hygiene. Often reliable dentists will refer you to an orthodontist if they know the issue is beyond their ability.

Our 3 point commitment:
- Care and communication: we want to create an open dialogue between patient and orthodontist. It is vital to us that you feel comfortable expressing your aesthetic goals and we can help advise you about your oral health. We prioritise this from the start of your treatment, always allowing you the opportunity to share and discuss your concerns.
- Expertise and experience: our team is comprised of dentists, orthodontic therapists, hygienists, nurses and support staff. Additionally, our specialist team has experience in paediatric dentistry and boast close ties with restorative consultants, child psychologists, paediatricians, speech therapists, plastic surgeons and maxillo-facial surgeons that we are happy to share with our patients.
- Technology: we utilise the latest technology to help make our treatment as efficient and as comfortable as possible. We use the latest miniature orthodontic braces and state-of-the-art wire technology to ensure braces appear as subtle as possible. We also use modern tools to reduce pain when drilling, for example.
