Coloured Braces
The elastic “modules” which are used to tie the archwire to brackets come in a variety of colours intended to make wearing braces more fun and fashionable. This is a very popular style of braces, especially among teenagers. The colours are usually used over metal braces, but they could be fitted over tooth-coloured braces too. These colours can be changed at every appointment, and you can go back to having no colours whenever you wish. See also: Fixed Braces.
Many of our young patients (and even adult patients!) here at Elite Orthodontics love to customise their braces with colours, either to show them off to their friends and peers or as a way of demonstrating that they are confident about wearing braces and proud to be having orthodontic treatment, or as a way of celebrating their favourite sports team or flag.
What’s the purpose of elastics in braces?
Although we give you the opportunity to customise your braces with colourful elastics, these elements are important for other reasons too. They fit over the metal brackets to help keep the archwire in place, which is important for moving your teeth into their desired position.
Personalise your experience with coloured braces
Although invisible aligners are becoming more and more popular, plenty of children and adults like to show off their braces as an accessory, and one way to really do that is with coloured braces. After all, if you have to straighten your teeth, why not make the journey work in your favour?
We offer a wide range of coloured elastics, from bright and cheerful to more neutral colours, and you can pick your preferred colour at every check-up or even opt for a mix of colours. So, if you’re getting bored of the way your teeth look when you smile, you can opt to switch things up at your next appointment by swapping colours.

Coloured Braces FAQs
Aside from making your smile more bright and cheerful, coloured braces offer many other advantages – including:
As well as the brackets and wires, the elastic bands used in metal and ceramic braces are notorious for creating oral hygiene challenges.
However, with coloured braces, you can clearly see build-ups of plaque and dirt on your teeth, allowing you to focus on the areas of your mouth that need the most attention and, therefore, keeping your teeth nice and healthy.
Many people are self-conscious about their smile when wearing braces, but with such a wide variety of coloured bands available, you can actually improve the look of your teeth.
You can choose a colour that complements your skin tone or a shade – like light blue, for example – that makes your teeth look whiter. The choice is yours, and the options are endless!
Again, with so many colour options available, you can choose to either reduce the appearance of your braces or actively embrace them and build your confidence that way. It’s all a matter of personal preference and what makes you feel most comfortable.
In truth, there’s no ‘best’ colour for braces.
It’s entirely a matter of personal preference and what makes you feel most confident.
If you want to disguise your braces as much as possible, you’ll be best opting for duller, more neutral tones like white or grey.
Maybe you’ve got a discoloured tooth (or several discoloured teeth) and want to camouflage them? In this case, opt for dark purples or deep oranges.
With the number of options available – you may even find it difficult to pick a colour. If in doubt, you can’t go wrong with your favourite colour, the colours of your favourite football team or even support your school/university by choosing a shade that matches the uniform.
If you’re still unsure, our orthodontists will be more than happy to help you select the most appropriate colour for your braces at your next check-up!
The only difference between coloured braces and regular metal or ceramic braces is the colour of the elastics.
They’re installed in exactly the same way – by applying an adhesive substance to the teeth, carefully affixing the brackets to the teeth, fitting the wire into each bracket and attaching small elastics to hold the wire in place.
Coloured elastics will also make your experience with braces much more personal – what’s not to love?

Yes!
If in the past you’ve opted for clear brackets and you now want to switch things up a bit with coloured ones, you can absolutely do this.
Each time you come to our orthodontists for your braces tightened (around every 6-8 weeks), you’ll have a chance to choose new coloured bands.
However, it’s important to remember that the colour of your braces might change slightly during this period depending on a couple of different things, including:
- Your brushing habits
- The pigments in the food and drink you consume
- The presence of bacteria that became embedded in the bands
